Visit the apiary in Sicriyoc: agritourism in Quillabamba
Quick answer
Can you visit an apiary in Quillabamba?
Yes. In Sicriyoc you can visit our apiary and experience beekeeping up close: meet the hives with protective gear, watch how the honey is harvested and taste honey fresh from the comb. It is an activity for the whole family and a great stop if you are in Quillabamba or the Sacred Valley. You arrange the visit on WhatsApp and we send times and directions.
What is an apiary and what happens on the visit?
An apiary is where the beehives live and where the honey is harvested. On our guided visit in Sicriyoc we lend you protective gear and bring you into the world of the bees step by step:
- You meet the hives and see how a bee family works.
- You watch a comb frame come out and how the honey is extracted.
- You taste honey fresh from the comb.
- You learn to tell wildflower, coffee and chuncho honey apart.
When is the best time to visit?
You can visit almost all year. The bloom months, September to April, are the liveliest: there is more movement in the hives and you may catch the harvest. The drier season is comfortable for walking and reaching us without mud.
Quillabamba is warm all year, so come in light clothing. Message us first on WhatsApp and we will tell you how the season looks and whether there is a harvest on those days.
What else can you do in Quillabamba and La Convención?
The apiary visit pairs well with a trip around the area. Quillabamba, capital of La Convención, is coffee and fruit country, with waterfalls, rivers and a calm high-jungle main square.
Many visitors come from Cusco or the Sacred Valley looking for something beyond the classic circuit. A real apiary, with a honey tasting, is a different and very local stop.
How do you book your visit?
Booking is easy: message us on WhatsApp with the date, how many people and where you are coming from. We arrange the time, explain how to reach Sicriyoc and answer your questions.
We welcome families and small groups. If you like, you can take honey from the apiary home at the end.
Frequently asked questions
How long does the apiary visit last?
The guided visit lasts about one to two hours, depending on the group and whether there is a harvest that day. It includes the tour of the hives, watching the extraction and the honey tasting. We arrange the time with you on WhatsApp.
Is it safe? Will the bees sting me?
It is safe. We give you protective gear and guide you at all times, calmly and at a sensible distance. Well-managed bees stay calm. We only ask that you tell us if anyone is allergic to stings so we can take extra care.
Can children come?
Yes, it is a family activity and children love it. We keep them close and in proper gear. For the youngest we keep a safe distance from the hives and do the honey tasting, which is everyone's favourite part.
How do I get to Sicriyoc from Quillabamba or Cusco?
Sicriyoc is very close to Quillabamba. From Cusco you reach Quillabamba by road in a few hours, and from there the apiary is a short stretch. When you book on WhatsApp we send you the location and exact directions.
What should I bring?
Come in light, comfortable, light-coloured clothing, closed shoes, a cap, water and sunscreen. We provide the protective gear to approach the hives. If you like, bring your own container to take honey home.
Can I buy honey during the visit?
Yes. At the end of the visit you can take home freshly harvested honey in whatever varieties are available that day: wildflower, coffee or chuncho. It is the freshest honey you will ever taste.
When is the best time to travel to Quillabamba?
Quillabamba is warm all year. The drier season, May to September, is comfortable for travelling and walking. The rainy season, November to April, is greener and coincides with the bees' strong bloom.
What activities are there at the apiary besides the visit?
Depending on the season, you can watch the harvest and honey extraction, learn to tell the varieties apart in a tasting, and meet the native chuncho bees. Tell us what interests you and we shape the visit to suit you.
Want real honey, from an apiary you can actually visit?
